Walking The Shops at Terrell With Kids: Where to Stop, Snack, and Shop
A Realistic Loop With Kids in Tow
If you’re a parent in Forney, Heartland, Travis Ranch, Devonshire, Gateway Parks, Mesquite, Rockwall, or anywhere in Kaufman County, you’ve probably already learned: a “quick stop” at any retail center with kids under 10 is rarely actually quick.
Here’s a realistic loop for The Shops at Terrell (formerly Tanger Outlets) with kids — built for survival, not Instagram.
The 90-Minute Family Loop
0–10 min: Arrive and reset
Free parking, plentiful. Park near the Old Navy / Levi’s anchor cluster — biggest cluster of kid-friendly stores within a short walking radius. Use the bathroom before shopping starts. Always.
10–35 min: Old Navy Outlet
This is the family anchor. Kid uniforms, summer basics, dresses for upcoming weddings, swim. Start here while everyone has fresh patience.
35–45 min: Crocs or Famous Footwear
Kids’ feet grow at terrifying speed. Crocs is faster (less trying-on); Famous Footwear has more selection but takes longer. Pick one based on patience reserves.
45–55 min: SNACK STOP
Critical timing. Around this point, kid patience drops sharply. Rocky Mountain Chocolate is a beloved detour for an older kid; the rotating food trucks at the center are great for hungry-not-meltdown energy. Negotiate a reward, set expectations for the rest of the loop.
55–70 min: Gugu Gifts (Suite 112)
This is where parents are sometimes surprised: bringing kids into a curated mid-luxe gift shop is fine. Our shop is family-friendly. Browsing parents while kids look at the Meri Meri kids’ display, the bamboo baby section ($12–$30 items), or the stuffed-toy corner is normal. We’ve watched countless families do this loop.
If you need a gift while you’re here — Mother’s Day, birthday, teacher gift, “we’re going to dinner tonight” — knock it out in 10 minutes. Walk out wrapped.
70–90 min: Either home or extend
- Home: One last bathroom stop, back in the car. Two outlet bags, one wrapped gift, kids satisfied.
- Extend: Hometown Cinema is at the same complex. If a movie’s playing they’d like and patience holds, you’ve got a full afternoon plan.
The “Come With Just One Kid” Bonus
If you bring just one child (especially a 6-12 year old who can hold attention longer), the loop expands:
- Old Navy + a small toy or accessory pickup at Gugu
- A snack negotiation about chocolate
- A 15-minute Gugu Gifts visit where they get to “help” pick out a gift for grandma or aunt — kids genuinely love being told they have grown-up taste
Kids who are involved in the gift selection feel ownership and brag about it later. We’ve watched this play out dozens of times.
What’s at Gugu Gifts That Kids Will Like
- Meri Meri party supplies and decor — fun visual; older kids love it
- Bamboo baby section (bibs, gowns, one-pieces) — for parents/grandparents shopping for baby gifts
- Stuffed toys including the Uliana Unicorn Knit Rattle ($23)
- Birthday Milestone Bracelets ($16) — for the older kid getting a “this is a real piece of jewelry” moment
