The Last Long Weekend Before Everything Gets Busy

Labor Day 2026 is Monday, September 7, giving you Saturday the 5th through Monday the 7th. In Kaufman County it’s the unofficial hinge of the year: school’s been in for three weeks, football has started, and it’s the last three-day stretch before the fall calendar fills up with homecoming, fall break, and the holiday run.

It’s also still going to be hot. Plan accordingly — this is an indoor-leaning weekend.

The Low-Effort Saturday Plan

10:00 AM — Arrive at The Shops at Terrell. Free parking, and Saturday morning before noon is comfortably the calmest window of the three days.

10:15 AM — Two anchors, not six. Labor Day weekend is one of the better sale windows of the year at the outlets:

  • Levi’s — end-of-summer denim markdowns before the fall inventory lands
  • Old Navy Outlet — the kids have already outgrown what you bought in August
  • Famous Footwear — cleats, school shoes, or both

Pick two. Trying to do the whole center with a family is how a pleasant morning becomes a forced march.

11:15 AM — Snack. Rocky Mountain Chocolate, or whatever food trucks are rotating through the center that weekend.

11:45 AM — Gugu Gifts (Suite 112). Fifteen minutes. If you’ve got a cookout Sunday or Monday, walk out with the host gift handled and wrapped.

12:30 PM — Optional. Hometown Cinema is at the same complex, and the September releases are usually a decent way to spend the hottest part of the afternoon.

What to Bring to a Labor Day Cookout

Same advice we give every cookout weekend, because it keeps being true: don’t bring more food. The host has food. The host has drinks. What the host doesn’t have is something small and good that outlasts the weekend.

Under $25

The multi-cookout strategy

If you’ve got two or three gatherings across the weekend — common here — buy three candles or two platters at once, have us wrap and tag them separately, and you’re done. Roughly $20 a host, no second trip.

What’s Starting to Arrive for Fall

Early September is when the shop starts turning over. If you come in this weekend you’ll catch the first of the fall inventory alongside what’s left of summer:

  • Warmer Voluspa scents moving in as the citrus and coconut fade out
  • Greenleaf’s fall fragrance range — the sachets ($1.50) are the cheapest way to test a scent before committing to a diffuser
  • Early Pampa Bay and tablescaping pieces for people who host Thanksgiving and start thinking about it in September

If you’re a Thanksgiving host, September is genuinely the right time to look. The good serving pieces don’t get restocked in November.

Practical Notes

  • Parking: free, plentiful, never actually a problem — even on a holiday Saturday
  • The drive: I-20 Exit 501. From Forney, Heartland, Travis Ranch, Devonshire, Gateway Parks, Mesquite, or Rockwall, you’re 10–25 minutes out
  • Best window: Saturday morning, or Sunday afternoon if you’d rather have the place to yourself
  • Downtown Terrell: five minutes away if you want lunch somewhere with more character than a food court

One Scheduling Note

We’re closed on Mondays — including Labor Day itself. So if you need a host gift for a Monday cookout, Saturday or Sunday is your window. Don’t drive out Monday expecting us.

Our hours:

  • Tuesday – Saturday: 10 AM – 7 PM
  • Sunday: 11 AM – 6 PM
  • Monday: closed

The rest of The Shops at Terrell keeps its own holiday hours, so the outlet anchors are still a Monday option — just not us.
