Probably Not What You Expect in Terrell

We carry more than 140 individual pieces of Japanese stationery — rubber stamps, pigment ink pads, fountain and rollerball pens, canvas pen cases, paper pads, and sticker seals. Seven brands, most of them imported, none of them things you’ll find at a big-box store off I-20.

People find this wall by accident. They come in for a candle and leave forty minutes later holding a stamp of a swallow in flight. So here’s a guide, because “a wall of small Japanese objects” is intimidating without one.

OSCOLABO — Rubber Stamps ($7–$19)

Twenty-three designs. OSCOLABO’s stamps are small, odd, and specific in a way that mass-market stamps never are: a rabbit facing backwards, a flying swallow, a ruler. They’re carved with real line weight, so the impression looks drawn rather than printed.

Best for: anyone who journals, wraps gifts by hand, or sends actual mail.

SHACHIHATA — Iromoyo Ink Pads ($9–$14)

Twenty-three colors. Shachihata is a century-old Japanese ink company and Iromoyo is their pigment line — the colors are dense and slightly muted, closer to watercolor than to office-supply ink. Dark Blue, Dark Green, Dark Red, Light Pale Pink, and a long tail of shades in between.

$12 for most pads. If you’re buying a stamp as a gift, buy a pad with it. A stamp without ink is a disappointing present.

KAWECO — Pens ($28)

Twenty-two in stock, all from the Lunar Sport line, in ballpoint and rollerball, in colorways like Light Green and Shadow Green. Kaweco is the German-made pen that Japanese stationery shops adopted and never let go of. Octagonal barrel, pocket length, threads closed so it doesn’t leak in a bag.

$28 each. This is our standard answer for “I need a gift for someone who writes constantly and has never owned a good pen.” It gets used daily and remembered for years.

LUDDITE — Kurashiki Canvas Pen Cases ($8–$44)

Twenty-four pieces. Canvas woven in Kurashiki, a Japanese textile town, sewn into pen cases and pouches. Black, Khaki, Turquoise, Green.

These wear in rather than out. Pair one with a Kaweco and you have a genuinely considered $46 gift.

LACONIC — Paper ($4–$32)

Sixteen pieces. Planning paper for people with opinions about paper. The A5 Creative Pad ($20) in Navy or Red is the anchor; smaller memo formats start around $4.

SANBY — Stamps ($10–$18)

Seventeen designs, mostly from the ANZ line. Slightly larger and bolder than the OSCOLABO stamps, with more graphic character. $13 is the common price.

PAPIER PLATZ — Flake Seals ($6–$7)

Eighteen sets. Small die-cut sticker seals — rabbits, bears, sewing motifs — from the Nakauchi Waka series. $6–$7 a set, and the single easiest thing in the shop to tuck into a card.

How to Shop It

If you’re buying for someone else and don’t know where to start:

Under $15 — a PAPIER PLATZ seal set ($6) plus an OSCOLABO stamp ($10)
Around $30 — a Kaweco Lunar Sport ($28) on its own, wrapped
Around $50 — a Kaweco plus a Luddite pen case ($18 + $28 = $46)
The safe one — a stamp and a matching Iromoyo pad, roughly $22 together

If you’re buying for yourself, start with one stamp and one ink color. Nobody stops at one.
